Vignette Flimsy

I feel like I should be opening a bottle of wine for this one!
Please allow me to proudly show off my
Vignette Mystery Quilt
as a flimsy :)

Back on the 7th August 2011 it looked like this

\

And now like this :)

I am so pleased that I stuck with this project.
It is the most labour intensive project I have ever worked on.
If I had not started it when I did and with the naivety of a
newby quilter I don't think I would have ever made it.

I am now so pleased that I did and it is now a Flimsy.

At times I have wished that I didn't do the Needle turn,
it is by no way perfect but it does reflect part of my journey
with this Quilt.

Another journey is about to begin with this Quilt.

I was going to send it out to be professionally quilted
but now I feel I need / want to give it more of my time and
hand quilt it so I have been out and purchased a hoop
and some supplies.

Now, do I make a scrappy back out of the left over fabrics?

or is this not such a great idea being I am going to hand quilt it
and with all those extra seams etc?

Also, I cant help but look at these photos and think twice about
stashing fabric, they are so pretty when they are made into something
and not hidden away, waiting to be used.

Enjoy your day,
hugs, Sharon

  3. Sharon I live your quilt. I am still at the stage where the fabric is in plastic bags. I have cut out the stitchery pieces and will hopefully begin to work on these. It is gorgeous.

  9. Sharon, this is the first one I've seen 'finished' as a flimsy. It came out just beautiful!! I am envious. I started out with great intent, but found I just couldn't afford each issue at this time, so had to abandon all thoughts of ever making this. You, my dear lady, should stand up and take a bow!! ~karen

  10. I can't believe you only had a stack of fabric in August. Now look at your beautiful flimsy! It is just gorgeous Sharon. If you are going to hand quilt it, it would be easier with a whole backing and not lots of seams.

  11. You must have patience of a saint, I'd been done for with the first block. It is fantastic, take a well deserved bow.

  12. Congratulations! It looks fabulous! I would not advise having a pieced back if you are hand quilting.....even two extra layers can be painful to quilting fingers.

  13. You are my hero! I am about 2/3 finished. . .and you are right, the most labor intensive quilt EVER! Like painting the Sistine Chapel ceiling. . .(sort of) :) It looks gorgeous. Thanks for sharing!

  14. I am popping a virtual champagne for you. Congratulations on a gorgeous finish. It may have taken some blood, sweat and tears, but epic projects give an incredible feeling of achievement at the end. Just wait until you've quilted it. A scrappy back would look fine, but you are right about the extra seams and hand quilting.....not impossible but not a lot of fun either.

  19. What a wonderful quilt. When I saw the first photo I thought it was all floral fabric until I saw the close ups and it is all embroidered. Brilliant! It will be amazing when you have quilted it. I'd probably go for an unpieced backing seeing you're hand quilting - why make life harder than you have to?!

  20. OMG...you must hand quilt Sharon that is stunning.....

  24. Woohoo!!!! This is absolutely fabulous. I would be ecstatic. (Yeah, I would not want to hand quilt with a scrappy back unless you're doing huge stitching.)

  25. Fantastic finish Sharon. Hand quilting it is going to be the icing on the cake. Whatever you choose to do with the back I'm certain it's going to look great.

  28. Amazing! Your massive effort is reinforcing that I will never get this one finished. I hadn't even finished block 1 when I knew it would be destined to become a cushion, not a quilt! Your top looks so beautiful, and will be made even more so with hand quilting...... have fun......

  29. OMG! Doesnt that look AWESOME! Really AWESOME! Well done!

  30. This is TRULY an ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS top!!! You have done a *fabulous* job on it over the last year, working diligently away on all that stitching and needle turn!! Truly inspirational Sharon!! ... Have you decided on another in-depth project to work on over the duration of 2013? Lol! Have a great New Year!!

  31. Sharon your perseverance has paid off BIG TIME! Congratulations, and I'm sure you will be happy with whichever way you choose to do the backing... can you feel me patting you on the back?!?! Hope so! x

  32. CONGRATULATIONS! Well done on getting it finished. You're making me feel guilty about mine! Your's is grgeous and I understand what you mean about not wanting to hide the fabrics away on the back. I would be tempted to get a full back to avoid seams and hide the pretty fabrics in your stash for playing with later. Good luck with the hand quilting - I know what you mean - after so much hand work it feels like the right thing to do! What wadding are you using?

  33. Unbelievable Sharon. That is the only word that can come out of my mouth...just WOW! I can't even answer your questions....:)

  34. Im in awe!!! Congratulations for sticking with it, its gorgeous. I agree with handquilting as you spent soo many hours stitching, it deserves a few more hours of love!

  35. This is so awesome!!!! Thanks for linking it up at BOMs Away. It's a truly amazing accomplishment for a new quilter, and I'll tell you right now, it would have taken me much longer to finish this flimsy! I'm sure someone has already said you'll be a whole lot happier hand quilting on a solid back rather than a pieced one, especially if this is your first quilt to do by hand. And I'm right with you - this one deserves that special attention. It's going to be a wonderful heirloom quilt.
